Musicals have been around practically since in the dawn of cinema, and have survived to this day as a popular genre, albeit with a smaller share of the market. To go along with the singalong spirit of the holidays and capitalize on the recent influx of Hollywood musicals, from Into the Woods to Annie, we’re dedicating our January issue to musicals. 

A.D. Cooper dances to the tunes of the Depression Era in her feature dedicated to musical world of the 1930s, taking us through some of the most popular musical filmmakers and performers of that decade and comparing and contrasting the genre’s domination of that period with the social and political turmoil of the time. 

On the more modern side, Juggy Sohal questions the appeal of modern musicals to all demographics, asking us: why aren’t men drawn to musicals as much as women? From Hairspray and High School Musical to Grease and Mamma Mia!, he weighs up musicals on their cross-appeal. 

We’ve also got reviews of musicals new and old. Samantha Ward praises The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a favorite of many. I also question the acclaim of 2006’s Dreamgirls, and explain why the new Annie remake makes me nauseous. 

For those who aren’t too into musicals, we’ve also got a review of the Oscar contender The Theory of Everything and Skeet Ulrich’s directorial debut, the short film The Girl on the Roof. Lynn Klein also gives us her take on the Top 10 Movies of 2014

We’ll also be posting the latest interviews, reviews, and editorials throughout the month, so stay tuned for those!
